Excerpts from Mad Max’s notes:
Wizards at Hornets
Both teams are losers of 4 of their last 5. And the main issue for both teams is defense or to be clear, lack there of defense. The Bullets are capable of some great offense but will be without Isaiah Thomas today as well as CJ Miles. Hard to latch onto much here. The Hornets are not good at home straight up or ATS.
Nuggets at Sixers
The Nuggets have 1 win in their last five while the Sixers have only 1 loss. Denver aims to do something that no one has done all season: beat Philadelphia at home. The Sixers improved to 12-0 after beating the Raptors on Sunday. That said they are 7-5 ATS at home and are only 9-10 ATS as a favorite. The Sixers won on Sunday despite 7 turnovers from Joel Embiid that resulted in a benching in the fourth quarter. The Nuggets are struggling to stop big men lately so this could be a chance for Embiid to redeem himself. The Sixers must lose sometime at home this season. Just don’t think it’s tonight.
Hawks at Heat
Meth Curry is averaging 34 points per game over his last 8 games. The Hawks have needed him to do so in order to stay anywhere competitive. It hasn’t been great, but it’s helped them beat a few of the lesser teams in the league. It doesn’t look good for them heading to Miami against a Heat team that has 4 of 5 and are 10-0 at home while being 8-2 ATS at home. The Heat are dealing with some injuries to Winslow and Dragic but should have enough to win. Just not sure about covering.
Knicks at Blazers
The Knicks were more competitive in their first game since firing David Fizdale but still lost. That said, we need to somewhat factor this coaching change into our calculations. We can’t completely dismiss their terrible play all season, but it gives us a new evaluation period to look at them and see how they play for a bit under coach Mike Miller. The Blazers have now lost 2 in a row which coincides with them giving a guaranteed contract to Melo. He had an off night on Sunday as he lost to his former team the Thunder. I like the Blazers to win but I hate them to cover here. I haven’t bet NBA since Saturday so screw it.
Devils at Stars
The Devils are just 2-8 in their last 10 games and are on a losing streak where they just don’t look competitive. The Stars got a nice win on Saturday over the Islanders. The money is coming in hard on NJ here for people trying to get a nice payout. I don’t see the value. I’d lean Dallas.
Lighting at Panthers
Solid matchup of Florida teams. I have this as an evenly matched game except the Panthers are the hotter team and at home. They are 9-4 at home and have won 3 of their last 4 on this homestand. The Lightning got beat badly last night and I didn’t like their energy at all. This is a 3 of 4 for them and they just need a break. I’ll bet the Panthers here.
Flames at Coyotes
Calgary is on one of their hot streaks again after a good win over the Avalanche last night. They Coyotes have won 3 of 4 and didn’t have to play yesterday so should be a bit fresher than the Flames. Not enough data in this one yet to see shifts and betting habits but I’m leaning the Coyotes here to cool the Flames tonight.
Blackhawks at Golden Knights
The money jumped hard on the Blackhawks and the lines adjusted to account for it. So, the sharps came on early and are banking on the Golden Knights’ inconsistent play lately. After some solid play last week, they ended the weekend with limp losses to the Islanders and Rangers. The Blackhawks lost a close one on Sunday and that broke a mini 2 game win streak for them. Vegas has not done that well at home and even worse if you look at their pucklines.
