Excerpts from Mad Max’s Notes
Jets at Ravens
Without question, the Ravens are capable of beating a team like the Jets by three touchdowns. Lamar Jackson has been somewhat limited in practice with a quad injury so maybe he’s a bit less dynamic, but it shouldn’t matter. The Ravens are just too good all around for New York to keep up.
O/U: I like the under here. I think it only goes over if the Ravens score 40 points. The Ravens defense is damn good and has held teams to under 14 points in their last 8 games. They held Seattle to 16, the Rams to 6 and Texans to 7. The Jets points will be few and far between today.
Sixers at Celtics
Philly has won 3 in a row but all of those were at home. The Sixers are 5-7 on the road and their last road loss was a shitty one to the Bullets. The Celtics are coming off that close loss last night in Indiana but are 10-0 straight up and 7-2-1 against the spread at home. Going into this season we all though the Sixers were far and away the better team than Boston. Not sure that gap is as significant as we expected. I missed on the Celtics yesterday.
Cavs at Spurs
The Cavs suffered their 8th straight loss last night and now travel to San Antonio to play a Spurs team that has won 3 of their last 4 but needed OT for two of them. San Antonio is still not a very good team, but they’ve at least shown up this past week after a few weeks of no shows. Lamarcus Aldridge looked good in just return from an injury and DeMar DeRozan has looked invested the past few games.
Mavs at Pistons
This is a neutral site game taking place in Mexico City. In many ways it’s closer to a home game for Dallas than it is Detroit. Both teams have had a few nights off. Dallas is coming off a loss to Sacramento that broke their win streak and Detroit has managed to win 4 of 5. The Mavs will have both an MVP candidate and an interpreter on the court tonight as their main man Luka Doncic speaks fluent Spanish since he played basketball in Spain before being drafted by the NBA. But more importantly, he can score, rebound and assist and keep Dallas in the playoff hunt.
Blazers at Nuggets
Denver returns home which is good for them since they’ve lost 3 straight on the road. Portland broke a 2-game losing streak by beating the shit out of the Knicks. In that win, Portland tried a bigger rotation than usual to match up with New York and it worked well. Be interesting if they do that again tonight against Denver. I’m not a fan of this game but I can see Portland hanging in there.
Predators at Sabres
Both teams have two game winning streaks going and haven’t played since Tuesday. Buffalo was one of the top teams in the league but dropped off a bit in recent weeks. The Predators have been playing much better hockey lately especially on offense. The Sabres have the edge at goaltending but that will be put to the test tonight with Nashville’s aggressive play.
Islanders at Panthers
Both teams last played the Lightning. The Islanders came out with a win and the Panthers a close loss. The Islanders continue to win with defense, but they did score 5 goals against the Lightning to show they can put up some offense too. The Islanders third ranked defense will be tested by Florida’s fifth ranked offense. The money is hard on Florida, but the line is getting better for them.
Golden Knights at Blues
The Golden Knights shit on my Blackhawks value play the other night and now travel to St. Louis to play the Blues. The Blues have lost three in a row after their Tuesday loss to the Sabres. The Golden Knights got an unexpected boost when their goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury returned after missing 7 games due to the death of his father. The Blues might have some key injured players returning tonight as well. This is a close one.
Blackhawks at Coyotes
The Coyotes had a successful road trip but returned home on Tuesday and got hammered by the Flames. The Blackhawks have lost two in a row including a home loss to the Coyotes on Sunday. Looks like Arizona might be a nice play today.
