Max’s NBA Bet Picks for 1/15/21
Atlanta at Utah
Spread: UTA -6 (Lean Atlanta)
Total: 224.5 (Bet Under)
Predicted Score: Hawks 113 – Jazz 108
Overview: The Hawks have not played in 4 days. It was a much-needed win over the Sixers that broke their losing streak and brought them back to .500. Utah is riding a 3-game winning streak and is starting to look like a possible contender in the West.
Utah is in the top 10 in defensive efficiency – which should be a given based on their style of play – but they are also creeping towards top 10 in offensive efficiency too. But it really has been their defense that has stepped up recently and yes, I say holding Milwaukee to only 118 points as a huge defensive outing.
For Atlanta, their offense was looking like it could be tops in the league. They were well-balanced and getting great shot selection. But their effective field goal % has been the worst in the league lately and they are getting back to the bad habits from last season.
So while their potential to score is there – I think the Jazz defense will be too much for them. I’m betting $20 on the under in this game. As for the spread, I am leaning the Hawks.
New York at Cleveland
Spread: NY -2.5 (Lean Cleveland)
Predicted Score: Cavs 103 – Knicks 102
Notes: Knicks are 3-3 on the road and Cavs 2-3 at home. Both teams are on losing streaks (4 and 3 respectively) and both teams have been incapable of breaking 100 points recently (ok, the Knicks did get above 100 in their last game, big whoop).
Orlando at Boston
Spread: ORL -1 (Lean Boston)
Notes: Boston hasn’t played all week because of Covid protocols. Who knows what that means. Very few lines for this game right now but seeing Boston as a dog, at home, means the expectation is the Covid cancellations (and player availability) is still a big question mark. Orlando has lost 3 in a row and their offense has not looked good. In this stretch, their effective field goal % is 3rd worst in the league and offensive efficiency is 2nd worst.
Dallas at Milwaukee
Spread: MIL -6 (Lean Milwaukee)
Total: 227 (Lean Over)
Predicted Score: Bucks 115 – Mavs 108
Notes: I have this as a very close one. I wanted to bet Milwaukee here but it really is too close for me. Dallas has won 4 straight and have done pretty well on the road so far (4-3). But the Bucks are the Bucks. Other than a blip against the Jazz, they have been rounding into form – ranking 1st in offensive efficiency, 1st in effective field goal percentage and 7th in defensive efficiency.
Chicago at Oklahoma City
Spread: OKC -1.5 (Lean Chicago)
Predicted Score: Bulls 114 – Thunder 109
Notes: The Bulls have been one of the most efficient offenses lately and OKC one of the worst. Chicago is top 7 in effective field goal % and #1 over the last 3 games. Sadly, it has not resulted in wins as Chicago has lost 3 in a row. Defensively, both of these teams suffer. I do like the Bulls here and wish I had some betting data to assess. For now, I can only lean them (but as a dog, this could be a moneyline play for them).
Memphis at Minnesota
Spread: MIN -3 (Lean Memphis)
Total: 224 (Lean Under)
Predicted Score: Grizzles 113 – Timberwolves 107
Notes: Memphis has won 3 in a row – including a big win over the T-Wolves only 2 days ago. Hard not to like them again today but these back-to-back mini series have been odd and lulled us into false senses of security. Still leaning Memphis here since I have them winning – but I have no betting data to assess here so can only lean them.
New Orleans at LA Lakers
Spread: LAL -8.5 (Lean Lakers)
Total: 222 (Lean Under)
Predicted Score: Lakers 113 – Pelicans 103
Notes: The Pelicans have lost 4 in a row and the Lakers have won 4 in a row. LA’s defense is trending to be the best in the league while New Orleans offense is trending down. This should be a double-digit win from the Lakers.
LA Clippers at Sacramento
Spread: LAC -6 (Lean Sacramento)
Total: 229.5 (Lean Under)
Predicted Score: Kings 114 – Clippers 113
Notes: I’m worried about my Clippers metrics because of that 51-point blowout still impacting things but looking at their last 5 games – it really is up and down. So who knows. Sacramento is in a similar boat here. I’ll lean the Kings but I don’t like this game at all.
