Max’s NBA Bet Picks for 1/28/21
Portland at Houston
Spread: HOU -4 (Lean Portland)
Total: 228.5 (Lean Under – 227)
Predicted Score: Blazers 114 – Rockets 113
Overview: The Blazers have missed CJ McCollum but have managed to keep afloat without him. Now they will need to deal with life without Jusuf Nurkic who fractured his wrist. Robert Covington is also banged up so the Blazers are undermanned heading into their matchup with the new look Rockets.
Houston has won 3 in a row and now granted, it was subpar competition, but still wins nonetheless. Christian Wood could be returning tonight and if John Wall, Demarcus Cousins and Victor Oladipo continue to play like they have – the Rockets actually have a deep and competitive team.
Houston’s defense is playing very well and now their offense is starting to pick up. My metrics say to take Portland so I will lean them, but I am very interested in seeing how Houston plays the rest of this season without fat boy to muck up their chemistry.
LA Clippers at Miami
Spread: MIA -5.5 (Lean LA Clippers)
Total: 215.5 (Lean Over – 216)
Predicted Score: Clippers 110 – Heat 106
Overview: Kawhi and PG will be out again because of Covid protocols and Patrick Beverley will miss tonight’s game with a banged up knee. The Heat will be without Jimmy Butler and Tyler Herro tonight while Goran Dragic’s status is still up in the air – he missed yesterday’s game with a groin strain and uncertain if he will go tonight. So without all of these players, this is unbettable for me and unwatchable for those at home.
Miami looked very bad on the court yesterday and LA wasn’t able to keep up with the Hawks a few days ago without their stars. I’ll lean the Clippers here but again, I can’t touch this game.
LA Lakers at Detroit
Spread: LAL -9.5 (Bet Detroit)
Total: 217.5 (Lean Over – 221)
Predicted Score: Lakers 113 – Pistons 108
Overview: The Lakers lost a close one last night and I don’t expect them to lose two in a row. In a back-to-back, there will be questions about LeBron and AD playing or how much they play. I expect them to be in the lineup but perhaps not need to play the entire game. For Detroit, the status of Derek Rose is up in the air – especially with trade talks swirling around him.
The Lakers are good 3 point shooting team and Detroit is bad at defending the 3. See yesterday’s blowout loss to the Cavs as an example of that. So this could get out of hand. Looking at Detroit’s record, you would expect their advanced metrics to be some of the worst in the league. But they aren’t. They are just underperforming.
There really is nothing I like on the board today but I expect the Lakers to take their foot off the pedal a bit in this one and only win by 5 or so. I’ll bet the Pistons.
Golden State at Phoenix
Spread: PHO -1 (Lean Golden State)
Total: 219.5 (Lean Over – 227)
Predicted Score: Warriors 116 – Suns 111
Overview: Devin Booker has a hamstring injury that kept him out of yesterday’s game but seems like he could be a go tonight. The Suns have lost 4 of 5 – including a couple of OT games where they could not close things out. Chris Paul was somewhat critical of the team’s play after last night’s loss and he’s right. Phoenix is underperforming right now.
For the Warriors, back-to-back games with Minnesota will right the ship of their offense. They had another easy win yesterday and rookie James Wiseman is starting to play well. Draymond Green’s play has solidified the defense – with the Warriors now ranked 14th in defensive efficiency.
I have the Warriors winning this one but without a lot of betting data available, and the status of Booker still questionable, I will only lean Golden State.
