Max’s Sports Bet Picks for 8/23/21
CWS (-107) at TOR (-101)
Pitchers: L. Lynn (ERA: 2.26 – Road ERA: 2.29 – Avg. ML: -134) vs. A. Manoah (ERA: 3.42 – Home ERA: 1.92 – Avg. ML: -127)
Pick: Bet $10 CWS
Notes: We’ve said it before on the show that the White Sox are driving on cruise control. And the fact that they are 18-18 since the All Star break seems to back that up. They play a Blue Jays team that is clinging to hopes of a playoff spot but still struggle to string together wins. And unfortunately for them, their AL East competition has not faded.
Cy Young leader Lance Lynn will take the mound for the White Sox today. Let’s see how he does coming off his belt-throwing ejection. And he won’t be getting an easy match-up as a potential future Cy Young winner Alek Manoah gets the start for the Blue Jays today.
The last time these guys pitched they combined for 13 strikeouts and 2 runs over 12 innings. So yeah, maybe eye that first 5 under here.
But my play is the White Sox. I think they get it done on the road.
$10 bet on Chicago.
SEA (116) at OAK (-126)
Pitchers: M. Gonzales (ERA: 4.21 – Road ERA: 3.44 – Avg. ML: 112) vs. P. Blackburn (ERA: 5.29 – Home ERA: 0 – Avg. ML: 170)
Pick: Bet $10 OAK
Notes: I keep waiting on Seattle’s luck to wear out and for them to fade but they keep winning. In fact, as they compete with Oakland for a Wild Car spot, it’s the Mariners who have played better baseball the past few weeks. And it hasn’t just been home games.
Seattle has improved their road record to 30-33. It’s still not ideal for a playoff bound team, but it’s still much better than it had been for them.
Marco Gonzales will get the start for Seattle and despite some good starts, he has been known to give up runs in bunches. Oakland might need that with Paul Blackburn on the mound for them. Could be a situation where you eye the over in this one.
Ultimately, I’m going to bet Oakland to pull out the win today because I think their offense comes alive against Gonzales. $10 bet on the A’s.
TEX (258) at BOS (-290)
Pitchers: K. Allard (ERA: 5.4 – Road ERA: 5.68 – Avg. ML: 156) vs. N. Eovaldi (ERA: 3.97 – Home ERA: 3.25 – Avg. ML: -120)
Pick: Lean BOS
Notes: This is the make-up game from the rained-out game from yesterday. Texas got the big / surprising win on Saturday so hard to believe they can do it again today. Eovaldi has pitched better at home this season and the Texas offense might have scored their monthly run total in that Saturday game.
ARI () at PIT ()
Pitchers: H. Mejia (ERA: 0 – Road ERA: 0 – Avg. ML: 0) vs. W. Crowe (ERA: 5.33 – Home ERA: 4.62 – Avg. ML: 166)
Notes: Arizona got a road win in Colorado and now they get a chance to get some road wins against another sub .500 team. The Pirates did win 2 of 3 from St. Louis – trust me I know – but Arizona has done well against this Pirates team (sweeping them just last month).
NYY () at ATL ()
Pitchers: J. Montgomery (ERA: 4.01 – Road ERA: 4.29 – Avg. ML: -121) vs. H. Ynoa (ERA: 2.8 – Home ERA: 1.56 – Avg. ML: -118)
Notes: Well, one team’s 9-game winning streaks will come to an end today. Both teams also have offenses that are on fire. Since the trade deadline – and the acquisitions of Rizzo and Gallo – the Yankees have been killing the ball. Atlanta has also looked good despite losing Acuna Jr.
Ynoa has been unhittable at home this season so maybe that gives Atlanta the edge here.
COL (116) at CHC (-126)
Pitchers: A. Senzatela (ERA: 4.67 – Road ERA: 5.94 – Avg. ML: 149) vs. K. Hendricks (ERA: 4.1 – Home ERA: 5.2 – Avg. ML: -103)
Pick: Lean COL
Notes: Tough one to bet here. Colorado is miserable on the road while the Cubs are just plain old miserable. Colorado won 2 of 3 against the Cubs last time they played.
KC (208) at HOU (-230)
Pitchers: D. Lynch (ERA: 5.38 – Road ERA: 4.77 – Avg. ML: 142) vs. Z. Greinke (ERA: 3.47 – Home ERA: 4.66 – Avg. ML: -136)
Pick: Lean HOU
Notes: Déjà vu here. Didn’t we see this 4 times last week? And didn’t KC win 3 of 4? But now the series shifts from KC to Houston – where the Astros are 39-24 this season. The Royals are coming off a sweep over the Cubs but they are putting sacrificial lamb Daniel Lynch up against former Royal Zach Greinke. Greinke has not faired well against his former team so maybe today is his day to shine.
